Parents, along with their preschool-aged children, can discover how to use this simple instrument while learning chants, songs, and beat-motion activities. You will also explore colors through the song-tale "Jennie Jenkins" and read a story that helps reinforce counting to 10. Lisa, the teacher, will also demonstrate a way to introduce classical music into story-telling.

In celebration of National Yoga Day, Weston Yoga is having a full day of free classes this Saturday. As I was searching around their website, I discovered that they regularly offer yoga classes for kids and tweens. I stared doing yoga in high school, but the way I look at it, the sooner you start the better. I can think of hundreds of benefits yoga can bring K. For example, patience, tolerance, flexibility, a better understanding of herself, etc. She's too young to start right now, but as soon as she's old enough, I will definitely be looking for a class. For now, I'll be the one going to Weston Yoga to take the restorative class. Every mom needs some restoration time.

I'm doing a news fast because I'm already having a difficult time going to sleep every night. I lie awake agonizing about the mothers and fathers trying to protect and provide for their little ones, only to find that there is nothing they can do. Since I was very young, I've always had a difficult time separating myself from massive distress. I used get chronic stomach aches when I was eight. It got to the point that my pediatrician instructed my mom to ban the evening news in our house. But I know this time I'm not the only one who's overwhelmed at the amount of human suffering going on in Haiti. What are you doing to deal with it? How have you helped?

In my perpetual search of family-friendly activities that stimulate our little one's brains, I was thrilled to find Music for Munchkins. It's a program run by the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra designed specially for kids. Some of the best parts of this concert series: they are free, take place early in the day, and are short (30-minutes). Even better, the concerts are followed by juice and Munchkin donut holes. Always a crowd pleaser. All concerts begin at 11:00 a.m. They are held at Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

I found this information on their website: Conductor Dr Lynn Luce, affectionately known as Dr. Mom, interacts with the young audience during the performance and teaches basic principle of classical music in a light-hearted fashion. The friendly Maestro has some tricks up her sleeve to entertain this special audience. These child-friendly concerts are sure to endear young listeners to orchestral music, cultivating the concert-goers of tomorrow.

How unoriginal is the fact that my New Year’s resolution is to start working out? I know. Blatantly unoriginal. But, boy, I REALLY do need to get myself in gear. First of all, my back has been killing me lately. The major culprits are the daily sessions of diaper wrestling, toddler chasing, and a fun little game we play called “Let’s Struggle to Get this Curios Kid Back in her Stroller.” You know that game. The other reason is that I know the only way teach a son/daughter to do something is to do it yourself. I want to K to lead an active life. Watching my mom sweat to Jane Fonda in her 80’s leotards definitely programmed me to value and enjoy exercise.
The other day I came across FLIPANY ( Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth). They provide affordable physical activity and nutrition programs for youth and their families in South Florida. This Saturday, they will be hosting the 4th Annual Memorial Heathcare Systems 5/10K Fun Run in Hollywood (You can also just walk it). The event includes an NFL PLAY 60 Zone open from 10am - Noon. Post Fun Run you can enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast sponsored by Whole Foods Market and prepared by Chef Ron Duprat of the Marriot Hollywood Beach Resort.

One of My Favorite Local Libraries

As a bona fide bibliophile, I can quickly give you the location of the best libraries within a given-mile radius. And if you asked me "What's the best library for kids in Broward County?", I would point you in the direction of the Alvin Sherman Library at Nova Southeastern University. They have some of the best programs for tots and teens including concerts, story hours, writing workshops, socials, art exhibits, movie nights, and puppet shows. One of the best things about this library is that just as many of their programs take place on the weekends or in the evenings, so workings moms and dads don't have to miss out on the fun. One of the best parts of being a mom is that I get to play with toys again. A couple of weekends ago, my niece shared her My Little Pony collection with K, who had a blast caressing their cotton-candy colored manes and chewing on their lavender manicured, miniature hooves. It reminded me of the giddy, fluttering excitement that rushed trough my tummy when I saw the face of my new Cabbage Patch doll for the first time. I saved her birth certificate for like ten years. They sell everything from clothes, to shoes, to toys, to furniture, etc. I went to the last sale and found adorable clothes from Gap, Children's Place, and Gymboree in excellent condition at incredible prices. If you are interested, you can also consign your clothes with them. It's a good way to make some extra cash.
I highly recommend this sale. In my opinion, it's a must-do for parents who love high quality at a low cost. Although they have special activities for the kids, I recommend leaving them at home, if possible. It gets super busy and it's so much easier to shop without them. That's just my suggestion. Also, make sure to get there as early as possible. I was shocked to see how early all "the good stuff" was snatched.

We visited Flamingo Gardens back in July. While it was hot, hot, hot, we still had a wonderful time. Lush tree canopies provide sweet shade in almost all parts of the park. We watched the Wildlife Show and one of the highlights was the story of a friendly little owl who is being rehabilitated at the Gardens. I would also recommend taking the narrated tram tour, $4 for adults, $3 for children (4-11), and free for anyone 4 and under. It was K's first tram ride and she got a kick out of the wind blowing in her hair. On the tram, we had access to parts of the sanctuary that you don't otherwise get to see and you learn some great plant and wildlife facts on the way. The best days to visit Flamingo Gardens are during "special events" because they have 1/2 price admission. Check out the calendar of events on their website for additional events and discounts throughout the year.

How about if after the concert the kiddos got to go to an ABC party (that's for Apple juice, Balloons and Cookies) and visit a musical instrument petting zoo? The website says that the hour-long children's concerts are an informal and friendly introduction to the exciting world of music, song and dance. Nick's Parents Connect conducted this great survey, Parents' Picks Awards 2009, where local parents got to select some of their favorite spots, services, and products in South Florida. I concur with most of the selections. For example, A Latte Fun was selected as Best Kid's Party Place, Quiet Waters Park got Best Park/Playground and Jungle Island is Best Tourist Spot. Also, congrats to Tropic of Mom for winning Best Local Blog. I would have liked for there to be two winners in that category and to have it include The Work/Life Balancing Act.
However, there is one selection on the survey I object to. Best Bookstore. It totally should have been Books and Books. No contest. I think Barnes and Noble got it. Not that I have anything against Barnes and Noble. Cool place. But, Books and Books is just not even on the same level. Come on. I wrote all about Books and Books here. Back in February, my mom and I took Karina to a Baby Loves Disco event. Technically, we were 'sneaking her in" because she was too young. And now, though Baby Loves Disco decided to leave the South Florida market, Ellen, a local mom, has created Disco Kids. (To me, that's even better, because I love supporting local moms). Learning Express Toys of Sunrise is a treasure box of family-friendly fun. The owners of this place have the right idea. This toy store has great activities on an almost-weekly basis. For example, this Thursday, Ms. Peanut Butter will be there at 11 am. Ms. Peanut Butter is an engaging and energetic children's entertainer who puts on a charming little show with her buddy Jelly, the Monkey, where kids play, dance, listen, and enjoy some bubbles. I participated in her free, weekly Mommy and Me class at Baby Love in Tamarac, and I image she does something similar at Learning Express. K warmed up to Ms. Peanut Butter very quickly. She was delighted during the performance.
Remember, Ms. Julie will be there on Saturday at 11 am. And on Sunday at 11 am, Elmo and Dora will be coming by. There is no doubt in my mind that they are a big hit with the kids.
The toy store offers a great selection for all ages. My husband and I like to take K on lazy, Sunday afternoons when there isn't much to do and just walk around and explore the aisles of books, favors, little cars, dolls, knickknacks, games, etc. The other day I saw the Twilight Turtle Constellation Nightlight and I think I'm going to buy it for K. The staff at the store is always welcoming and friendly.
Part of the charm of every toy store is the nostalgia it conjures of our own childhood. They are innocent, playful places. The little girl in me is drawn to oodles of toys and games. And the mom in me gladdens at the sight of K's smiling baby face as she participates in the activities they offer.
BTW, there are Learning Express Toys all over the place. Some other locations are Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs, and Boca.

I am a foodie. When I finish breakfast, I start contemplating lunch: guacamole, hummus, turkey sandwich, mmm...? If I'm having a bad day, I daydream about gallo pinto or a juice burger with crunchy fries. One of the my most relaxing activities is zoning out to someone chopping and dicing on the Food Network. I savor capers, artichokes, and olives. And I can probably tell you where there's a Thai restaurant in your city. My husband says I'm obsessed. But I know it's genetic. Once, someone said that it's cheaper to buy the women in my family diamonds than it is to feed us. A blissful moment for me was the day I had to give K some prune juice (hear me out). She was four months old and, as she downed the bottle, licked her lips, and cried for more, I knew a had a baby foodie on my hands. She enjoys trying new flavors, even unusual things, just like her mommy.
And my baby foodie is into Yummy in My Tummy. The owners, Michael and Karen, are a mom and dad team who provide the highest quality organic baby and toddler food. The store is clean, organized, and the staff is always sweet. I have to admit, I buy food for myself when I visit. One of my favorites is the scrumptious mac and cheese, not salty and artificial, but creamy and authentic. Besides the delicious food, they sell all kinds of eco-friendly products, like utensils, bibs, sippy cups, etc. I recently found out that they do "tastings" for groups where you can sample the food and get a discount on what you purchase that day. When you go, buy yourself a little cup of Dutch Apple. Trust me.

Mr. Blue's Water Safety Puppet Show

My good friend and I took our fidgety 10 month-olds to a puppet show this weekend at the Learning Express Toys of Coral Springs. The store itself is worth checking out. The staff is so friendly and the store has an incredible selection of toys for all ages. The show was all about Mr. Blue, a fish who forgets how to swim. His friends teach him water safety lessons as they get him back in the water. K watched was enthralled from beginning to end. She did not move. The puppets were a hit with the audience. The audience members varied in age from baby to about 6 or 7 year-olds. The creator is Julie, a private swimming instructor who will have your little one swimming in less than a week. She travels all over Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. Julie is likable, honest, and passionate about water safety, swimming, and kids. My friend and I purchased the story book about about Mr. Blue, which also comes with a DVD. A meaningful moment for me was when (after the show) a father told a personal story of how he had put swimming lessons on the back burner and later got a phone call about his daughter being in the hospital after an incident when she almost drowned. His daughter is now happily swimming after lessons with Miss Julie. When you live on a peninsula, swimming lessons aren't just fun, they can be a real life saver. Here are some other upcoming shows:

Books, a Baseball Hero, and a Piece of the Moon

Tomorrow, the Fort Lauderdale Friends of the Library are having their monthly First Friday Special Collection Book Fair at the Main Branch. This is when they put out the best donated books. Most books are about $1. I went a couple of days ago (not on a book fair day) and bought myself Under the Tuscan Sun and Wuthering Heights. I spent $1.25. Total. Both copies are in perfect condition. Remember, they also have magazines, DVDs, children's books, etc.
If you visit the Main Branch, please don't forget to stop by the 6th floor. They currently have two great exhibits. The first is a little piece of the actual moon, donated by an astronaut's wife. It's pretty cool to think that you are looking at a particle that was previously floating in space. At the display, they have free materials for the kids to take home, like posters and stickers. The other exhibit is an Smithsonian traveling showcase on the life of Roberto Clemente, my favorite baseball player ever. He was a Puerto Rican humanitarian whose plane disappeared as he was on his way to donate goods to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. His life story is inspirational and, man, a great role model for kids today. Have the little ones go on this great bilingual website, to learn more about on my the coolest, sweetest men to ever play baseball.

The end of summer is never easy for kids. Good bye, fun. Hello, school. This year, I feel their pain more than ever. I'm going back to work for the first time since K was born, almost 10 months ago. I'm making a conscious effort to have a positive attitude. Would I love to stay home with K? Abso-freaking-lutely! Did I want to go shopping for work pants that are a size too big because I still haven't lost my baby weight? I would rather pull out my eyelashes one by one. Oh, sorry, I forgot. Good attitude. Let's see, I do miss my work friends and I do love my school. And I'm convinced that the universe is going to bless me with great students this year. I'll let you know. Anyway, change is inevitable. It's constant. How I deal with it sets an example for K. And I want her to be flexible, independent, and, most importantly, happy. I'm committed to being the best mom I can be, whether I'm staying home or working, and that has to count for something. Right?
I wanted to share this with you: Back to School Splash at The Falls. Because going back to school is a great new beginning, when you have the right attitude. It's a new opportunity to start fresh, make new friends, and it's the perfect way to discover how strong you really are, how capable you are of appreciating new adventures. Because in the end, you always have the choice to make your life more difficult, or to let go, have faith, and embrace change.

K. had her friends over for a play date. Watching four nine-month-olds crawling and sliding their chubby hands on my floor, while reaching for the taste of a toy, made me happy. And it made me think, more than ever, how important it is to keep a healthy, clean indoor environment. I'm trying to use no chemicals when I clean. I'm sticking to baking soda, vinegar, castille soap, and essential oils. I use a book titled Green Clean and find it very helpful. Another great resource is Healthy Child, Healthy World. That's where I learned how to make the disinfecting castille soap cleaner I use for K.'s toys. A couple of months ago, I also discovered Green Dwellers, an online store that sells natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly products for the house and for our little ones. They have everything from soy candles to toys. The owner is an intelligent, stylish local mom named Mylene. She started out because she wanted to provide quality, earth-friendly products for her family. She also does green workshops where you can learn how to make more informed choices for your home while having fun.
Now that I'm a mom, I think more seriously about the products I bring into my home. Not just because I care about my health, my husband's health, and my baby's, but also because, hopefully, K. will be living on this planet for many years to come.

Day at the Museum

Yesterday we went to a free family fun day at The Bass Museum of Art. It’s a small museum in Miami Beach. You are not going to see an extensive collection of well-known artists. But the building is architecturally interesting and, while I am no expert or anything, I thought some of the art they had was thought-provoking and fun to look at. And they do an exceptional job with these family fun days. As the kids walk in, they receive an “art explorer” clipboard. It’s a scavenger-hunt-type set of questions like: Where is the fox and is it in its natural habitat? The kids go around the museum paying close attention to everything they see. At the end of the event, kids turn in the answers for prizes. One five-year-old boy was so excited when he found “the boy in uniform”. It was encouraging to see a little guy enjoying himself like that in a place that could otherwise have been pretty boring for him. They also had at least 8 different art projects going on at stations throughout the museum. Some little hands I saw were hard at work making ships and parachutes. In an airy, well-lit room, they gave away snow cones and popcorn for the kids and coffee for the adults while a young artist drew portraits for $2. Good deal. (He was good at what he was doing.) One of the highlights for me was the showing of Home, a fascinating documentary about our planet. We only watched the first couple of minutes at the museum because K. was not having it. But, I watched the rest on YouTube. The next family fun day will be Sunday, September 13th. Even if you don’t live near Miami Beach, it’s worth the drive.

I haven’t met Lisa, but after a long phone conversation and some email correspondence, I‘ve decided I already like her. Lisa is a music and movement teacher with some impressive credentials. She has been teaching for over 20 years and she is the owner and director of Wee Wiggle and Sing: Broward Music and Movement Classes. Starting this fall, she will be teaching classes in Davie, Plantation, Sunrise, and Hollywood. Registration begins in August. Her fee is about $88 for 8 weeks. I have been looking around for music lessons for K. and this is the best price I have come across so far. But beyond price, what I like about Lisa is that she has an obvious passion for teaching music to young children. For example, I found this declaration on her website, “I am strongly committed to my endeavor to teach effectively and use the best possible resources at my disposal. I am an advocate of classical music and art appreciation and dedicated to promoting its value in education”. Her mission is to provide quality music lessons at reasonable prices with no hidden fees and no pressure to buy extra materials. She believes a mom can find musical instruments throughout the house, like pots, pans, and wooden spoons. She’ll teach you how to make shakers so you don’t have to go out and buy them. It seems to me that not only the little ones, but also the parents, will get some valuable lessons on being resourceful and creative in this class.

A Latte Fun

I convinced my husband to visit an indoor playground this past weekend. It helped my case that my brother-in-law, his wife, and their kids were coming with us. My niece is 5 and my nephew is 3. We decided to visit A Latte Fun in Coral Springs. My good friend and her nine-month old baby joined us, as well. It just opened last week, and man, let me tell you, everyone and their mother was there. The place has a coffee lounge section for parents decorated with comfy couches, stylish high chairs, jazzy background music, and a huge glass panel overlooking the play area. They also have a great menu. In the lounge, there is a variety of toys for sale, many of the same toys that are available to the kids inside. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. The play area has a super fun foam pit. Right next to it is the ground-level trampoline, which I really enjoyed. Yes, I enjoyed it. K. hung out with her daddy while I frolicked, bounced, and slid with my niece. (When you go, you need allow your self the freedom to glide down the inflatable slide.) My niece and I decorated ourselves with boas, ballerina skirts, and one of those cone-shaped princess hats. Later, we played “super market”. My friend and her nine-month old enjoyed the foam pit while my nephew happily played with a little remote control car. There was only one thing I didn’t enjoy, I felt the music was too loud. With the kids playing and screaming and the music blasting, for a second there, K. was a little overwhelmed. Two things I did like, first, the comfortable parent-chairs scattered along the perimeter, good thinking, and second, the staff was very amiable and polite and there was plenty of supervision. A Latte Fun is a perfect place for anyone between the ages of 1 and 5. Or anyone who wants to remember what’s it’s like to be between the ages of 1 and 5.

(Regular adult admission is $20). BTW, Broward county teachers get in for free all the time. During family days, the house tours cater to kids. They go a little more quickly. Another plus is that families can bring their own food to eat at one of their many picnic tables. They don’t sell food at the Bonnet House. And this bit of info may interest the kids, Bonnet House was the main location for the movie "Hoot" and the finish line for season 7 of the "The Amazing Race". So, don’t forget your camera.

We all know you can check out books at the library. Duh… But you may not know about these super cool people called Friends of the Library and all the bargains and resources they have to offer. Friends of the Library is a group of volunteers who sponsor book shops, book fairs, and programs for everyone at many local Broward County libraries. I love them because I can buy donated best-sellers in great condition for like $1 or $2. They also sell CD's, DVD's, audio tapes and magazines. I find incredible books for my sixth-grade classroom library and books for K., my nine-month old, at unbeatable prices. My local Friends of the Library has a little shopping area right by the entrance of the branch. It’s a pleasure browsing through the shelves of almost-new books that are conveniently organized by author’s last name. Just like at the bookstore, but at a fraction of the cost. Now, obviously, they don’t have the selection you will find at Borders. But, you can’t complain when you’re buying great books for a buck. The Friends at Main Library in Fort Lauderdale have something called First Friday Special Collection Fair. The first Friday of every month from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, they put out the best books that have been donated that month and sell them at a discount. They have a great selection of children’s books. Friends of the Library have 32 local chapters. I know you’ll find one close to your house. West Regional, Weston, Coral Springs, Tamarac, and Dania Beach are just some locations. Now you can satisfy your inner bookworm even in an unforgiving economy.

A Garden for your Flower Child

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has the potential to charm many: tree huggers, art-enthusiasts, photography lovers, and almost anyone under the age of six. There is so much to see. It’s an 83-acre property with plenty of room for the kids to run around. And during the month of August, everyone gets in free on Sundays. It’s a picturesque, world-famous green space with natural exhibits and pathways lined with palms, flowering shrubs, vines, and fruit trees. One of the highlights for me is the butterfly area. The other great part is the appealing works of art throughout the garden, like Di Suvero’s industrial steel pieces, which make an interesting contrast to all the greenery, and Chihuly’s psychedelic blown glass. Fairchild also hosts wonderful events, like the International Mango Festival happening this Saturday and Sunday. Personally, I’m looking forward to the International Chocolate Festival in January. The regular prices of admission are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (65 and over), $10 for children (6-17), and children 5 and under are free. Free Sundays for everyone is a sweet deal in my book.

When I was six, my favorite activity, besides running in rainstorms and climbing mango trees, was lounging in my grandfather’s music room. We would sit together in delight as the sound of Vivaldi or Tchaikovsky bounced off the walls and landed in our ears. He likes his music LOUD. My grandfather owns over 1,000 CDs, records, cassette tapes, and reels. He’s 90 years old and likes to chill in the hammock of his tropical backyard listening to his iPod. With such an example, how could I not love music? And I want K. to love music. I know all the good stuff it will do for her brain. But more importantly, it’s one of life's sweetest pleasures.
So, I found out about some free, upcoming musical performances for kids and thought you may want to know about them. I haven’t seen either performer yet, but as soon as I do, I’ll tell you about it.

Billy Joe Bob

Not that I’m an expert on any topic, but if I were to be an expert on something, (as a writing teacher, bona fide book club member, library explorer, novel collector, and former nerd) then that something would be bookstores. And, in my “expert” opinion, Books & Books is the best local bookstore we have. It’s a pretty courtyard building surrounding an outdoor café. The inside is a storybook romance for any bibliophile. The walls are crammed with pages and pages of words waiting to be read. The people who work there really know their stuff, too. Also, it is THE place in South Florida to meet famous authors, if you’re into that kind of thing, which I am. And, parents, this is the best part for you: they have the coolest free activities for your little readers. For example, on Saturday, July 11 at 11:00 am, kids get to meet the real actors from the Actors’ Playhouse production of Stuart Little. They come over in costume to hang out and chat. This summer, Books & Books is also doing something called Summer of Fun Book Clubs for Kids. Here is a schedule of some of the activities:

What kid doesn’t like scavenger hunts? The Hollywood Gazette is holding a great, child-oriented event called the Park Sheridan Quest. The mission is this: you arrive at one of three designated spots in the plaza, which will be marked by balloons, and receive a treasure map and set of clues. You also have the option of receiving a compass, telescope or eye patch. Next, you follow the rhyming clues and, as you figure them out, you earn stickers to mark the X's on your map. Many of the food locations in the plaza will be shelling out free samples. When you finish the expedition, you acquire a raffle ticket. The grand price is a three-night stay for a family of four at the Doubletree Castle Hotel in Orlando. There are other smaller prices as well. I think the real treasure will be a night of exciting, interactive family bonding.

Do you remember coloring books? Why don’t we color any more as we get older? Oh, I remember. We have to clean, work, pay bills, cook, go grocery shopping, do the laundry. Sigh.... We have kids now. The Knack, a website dedicated to child creativity and imagination, has printable coloring pages and project ideas for those hot, humid, rainy, South Florida days. Budding artists can also join an online club for free and receive special offers, birthday greetings, and exclusive web features. At the bottom of the page, you enter your zip code and find the next artistic activity going on at your local Michael’s. This Saturday, July 11th from 10 am to 1 pm, you can make your own personalized summer fun tote bag using a variety of paints and stencils. I have not been to one of these yet, but I called the Plantation store and they told me that all supplies are included and it's completely free. The friendly sales clerk said it takes the kids about 15 to 20 minutes to complete the project. That sounds just as good as coloring to me.

We did it back in April. We let our sweet, innocent baby scream her lungs out as we sat outside the door watching the monitor, pulling our hair out, biting our nails, our bodies twitching. It’s supposed to last three to four nights according to the doctor. It took K. one long week. Finally, something clicked in her brain and she figured out that we weren’t coming to soothe her. That was her job now. I can’t say that it was easy, but I can say that it was worth it. I didn’t read a book or attend a workshop for helpful hints on how to make the process run more smoothly. But it’s good that there is a workshop. See below.

In the upcoming events, you can figure out how to set a productive bedtime routine, score free coffee and muffins, and add some new, natural, family-friendly recipes to your repertoire. Young at Art is a small museum. K. is still too young for Young at Art. She’s eight months old. Nevertheless, I went with one of my meetup groups and I watched kids in the group who were older enjoy the place. They had a great time at the Global Village banging on the African drums and they learned a little about recycling in the Earthworks exhibit. The current traveling exhibit is Alice’s Wonderland: A Most Curious Adventure. I think this is a good museum for children between the ages of 2 and 8.
Mommy Tip: I imagine it will get crowded since they are free events. Maybe it’s better to get there early.

Having a Ball in the Ball Pit at Busy Bee Kidz

It is July in South Florida, which means my new hobby is continually searching for entertaining, air-conditioned play areas. Last week, I went to open play at Busy Bee Kidz in Cooper City with my eight-month old, two of my mommy friends, and their three toddlers. I would have had to pay $12, if I didn’t have the free open play pass I received back in April in my goody bag from Lolliposh Bazaar (future post). K., who is only eight months, had a blast and her toddler friends were absolutely engaged for the two-and a-half hours we were there. This place is perfect for kids between the ages of 1 and 3, maybe 4. There are two rooms. One room is filled with dress-up clothes, little trains and cars the kids can ride, kitchen play areas, a great selection of infant toys, a small ball pit, play houses, etc. The other room has the bigger stuff, like a rock climbing wall, a trampoline, an airplane see-saw, and a slide that was a big hit with the toddlers. The place is clean and it wasn’t too crowded at all. The kids who were there seemed genuinely amused. Three boys sat and created multiple looks for the Mr. Potato Heads while a little girl pranced around in a princess costume practicing her high heel skills. They have a parent lounge with TVs and Internet access, an infant sleeping area, a snack machine, and also offer parent/child classes. Their website says they have free tea, coffee, and snacks for parents while the kids play. What I liked about it is that they have toys K. enjoyed and she got to try out stuff like the Little People Noah’s Ark, the activity tables and cubes, and walkers. Now I know which toys she would actually play with if I were to buy them. And she had a ball in the ball pit. Mostly, she sampled the taste difference between the green and red balls while giggling at the antics and tricks of her older friends. But she was in there for like 20 minutes! My friends and I actually got to discuss the hilarity of The Hangover (the movie) among other actual conversation topics. Yes, we conversed. And the four kids played and were happy for a couple of hours. Honestly, I would have paid $12 for such a luxury these days.
